Disappearing Campers, UFOs, And Glowing Orbs – The Many Paranormal Mysteries Of Stonehenge
While the debate as to who built Stonehenge, how, and why continues, one thing that is certain is that it is a most mysterious place, perhaps one of the most mysterious places on the planet. Perhaps not least as there is so much debate as to the site’s history still today in the contemporary era.
We know that the monument has stood for at least 5000 years and that it is made from bluestone, the nearest quarry for which is almost 240 miles away. If we assume that these claims are accurate, how those stones were transferred such vast distances without the aid of modern technology is something very much open to debate.
In the summer of 2021, Stephen Tasker claimed that not only did he have a theory on how this was achieved, but he had built a prototype of an “ancient machine that defies gravity”. Furthermore, instructions on how to build such machines were clear in biblical writings. Tasker would use these texts to create a prototype “gravity-defying machine”, adding that not only might such a machine explain how Stonehenge was built but other mammoth buildings such as the Great Pyramids of Giza.
The prototype – made from wood – has been successfully tested using rolled-up carpets and managed to move them a good distance as he expected it would. What is interesting to note here is that there have been discoveries of wooden sleds – similar to the prototype designed by Tasker – that some scientists believe were used to transfer the stone blocks that make up the Pyramids.
Several people who have examined the prototype – including Dr. Campbell Price of Manchester Museum, and engineer Sean Whitehead, who was involved in recent explorations of the Great Pyramid – were largely impressed by Tasker’s theories (although we should note that not everyone was as accepting of the possibilities raised by Tasker’s work).
Whether there is any accuracy in Tasker’s theories, at least one person does not subscribe to the notion that this bluestone was quarried and transported hundreds of miles at the time mainstream history says it was. Geologist Brian Johns believes that there is no evidence such a quarrying mission was even undertaken at the time. Furthermore, he contends that when the first settlements were established in the region the monument was already ancient and fully built.

What’s more, he believes that the presence of ley lines is as much to do with its location as anything else. Indeed, there are several theories that suggest not just Stonehenge, but all of the major monumental wonders of the world reside on these ley lines, with some going as far as to state that in ancient times these monuments formed some kind of free energy grid.
Whatever the truth of Stonehenge’s construction, and why it was built in the first place – a subject that would fill entire volumes in their own right – the ancient stone circle has plenty of mysterious paranormal incidents connected to it in our modern world.

The 1971 Campers’ Disappearance Incident – Genuine Encounter, Or Nothing But Urban Legend?
We have mentioned before about the urban legend of sorts that states a group of young friends seemingly disappeared into thin air following a camping trip to the Stonehenge site in mid-August 1971 (before it was protected from the public as it is today, with the site enjoying 24-hour protection from an on-site security team).
Essentially, the basic account is that at some point just after August 18th 1971, five young adults embarked on a camping trip, setting up their tents in the middle of the ancient stones. Several hours after they had set up camp, at around 2 am, an unusually powerful storm suddenly rolled in, unleashing wind, rain, and lightning down on Salisbury Plain. The lightning bolts not only hit several nearby trees but also the stones themselves.
Witnessing the events by chance was a local farmer and a patrolling policeman. They would claim that when the lightning hit the stones, they glowed a brilliant blue color “so bright they had to avert their eyes”. Even worse, each would claim they could hear the panicked and terrified screams of the campers from their respective positions.
Each arrived at the site, fully expecting to find the burnt and crippled remains of the young adults in the middle of the stone circle. However, to their utter shock, all that remained was the smoldering remains of their tent pegs. The campers themselves were nowhere to be seen – as if they had simply vanished into thin air. Many researchers since have suggested that the freak lightning hitting the stones might have opened some kind of portal, sending the five young adults to a place or a time unknown. And as outrageous as such claims might be, when we remind ourselves that the site is built upon a convergence of ley lines, it might not be as preposterous as it first sounds.
Incidentally, according to some sources, the campers were Julia Ashton, Lucas Addams, Shary Wilson, Danniel Wilson, and Wilma Rupert (although the source of this information is not clear and should perhaps be treated with a pinch of salt). Indeed, many state the account has little truth and is essentially just an urban legend.

The intriguing incident, though, would take an even more intriguing turn when an apparent journal was recovered at some point in 1997 allegedly belonging to Danniel Wilson, the same Danniel Wilson who it is claimed is one of those who went missing in the summer of 1971. It is claimed that it must have been dropped by Wilson as he and his friends made their way to the ancient site. Along with the journal – a short distance away – several letters were also discovered, seemingly written by the members of the campers.
The first entry of the apparent journal is dated July 10th and mentions how Wilson and two unnamed friends mentioned camping out at Stonehenge one evening which Wilson wrote: “seemed like a pretty good idea at the time”. What is interesting is that it appears the campers are not from England given a line that his friends had initially told Wilson that they should “camp in that big rock place in England”.
The second entry is from the following day and appears to suggest that the campers were American. Wilson states that he spoke with Shary (who we might presume is his sister) “about the trip we might take”, to which she responded that she had “always wanted to cross the pond”. The same entry goes on to state that Wilson went to visit Wilma to talk with her about the potential trip. According to the entry, she was not at all happy about the idea, claiming that she had “had dreams about a ‘circle of rocks’ and ‘God’s hand striking’ or something like that”.
Another entry of interest is dated August 17th, in which Wilson writes that “after doing work for a month at Mr. Jacobson’s farm” they had enough money to buy what they needed for their trip to Stonehenge. It would appear they were setting off the following day. Another intriguing line, however, once more relays an apparent dream of Wilma’s. The entry states that she dreamt that the group was “at Stonehenge, camping, and it got so bright that nobody could see nothing and that we ended up somewhere cold”.
The final entry in the journal is dated the following day (August 18th). The opening line states that the group has arrived and is setting up their tent in the middle of the stones. The entry states that a radio weather report said there was a chance of rain. The entry signs off with Wilson writing that he was being called to help set up the tent.
As well as the journal there were also several letters discovered. The first two – written by Julia Ashton and Lucas Addams respectively – mainly speak about how they had brought “grass” with them on their journey, and how they had spent much of the evening smoking it inside the stone circle. Addams’ letter also writes about how Wilma appeared “nervous” and kept saying that “something bad’s gonna happen”.

Addams’ letter also writes about how Wilma appeared “nervous” and kept saying that “something bad’s gonna happen”.
The third letter was written by Wilma herself. And her letter, if we accept it to be true for just a moment, is most intriguing. The opening line states:
“It’s raining! I knew there’d be rain. There’s always rain when the blue glow comes. The blue glow comes for me every night!”
She then says that this only happens when she is “not drunk” (we should note that Wilma’s father had recently died and that several of her friends had noted that she had increased the amount she drank in the months that followed. Even more intriguing, though, is that Wilma goes on to say that “they took my pa, straight into the sky, like nothing”. Whoever these people or entities were, she does not say, although it is perhaps an accurate guess that she is referring to some kind of alien abduction scenario. She would further write that the lighting was coming close and that she could already notice the stones of the circle glowing brighter. Her last line states that “if someone finds this, tear this god-forsaken place down and…” The writing then becomes unreadable. It is not clear if this was being written right before the alleged disappearance, but it would certainly appear so.
Many who claim to have studied the documents and the case itself have come to the conclusion that Wilma had psychic abilities, likely due to the fact that she had been abducted by aliens (like her father) several times. It is certainly an intriguing incident, with some people claiming that it was this event that caused authorities to ban overnight camping at the ancient site and ultimately, not to allow unsupervised access to the structure. And while this is most likely due to the fact that many people who did enjoy free access to the site treated it with little respect (with claims of many “chipping” pieces of the stone away to take home), it is certainly an intriguing thought.
There are also several other issues that we should highlight with the account. Perhaps not least that had the journal and letters have been lost on the way to Stonehenge – essentially, left in the elements – it surely would have decomposed over the quarter of a century before they were discovered. That means that they were either discovered at the time and released into the public arena discreetly in 1997, or they simply didn’t exist at all.
We should note, though, that there are several other UFO sightings near Stonehenge on record, two of the most intriguing from our modern times. It is there we will turn our attention to next. The short video below looks at this strange incident a little further.

UFO Sightings Over Stonehenge In The 2000s
In 2015, a man named David Jacobson managed to capture an image of a black disc-shaped object seemingly hovering over Stonehenge just days before the Summer Solstice. According to an account on the Daily Mirror platform, Jacobson estimated that the object was around 20 to 30 feet across to the naked eye and appeared to be hovering over the ancient site. You can see that picture below.
What is perhaps interesting is that released UFO documents from the British government in 2013 appear to confirm another UFO sighting, at some point in the years prior to 2009. According to the files, an e-mail dated January 14th, 2009, under the subject “UFOs over Stonehenge?” stated:
“I thought that I would you these digital photos because they were taken a couple of years ago at Stonehenge of all places, so, possibly significant. All were taken within about 30 minutes…and although I didn’t see anything in the sky at the time because I was focusing on the stones, upon uploading them to my computer…I sported the discoid shapes in the background. It was upon ‘zooming in’ on the shapes that I thought the images significant!”
The message was signed off stating that the sender was “sure you get this kind of thing every day. However, I’m very fond of my UFOs so needed to share them”. Whether the Department of Defense undertook any kind of investigation into the sighting is not known. The pictures, though, are extremely interesting, one of which you can see below.
Other Strange Incidents At The Ancient Site
There are many more strange incidents connected to Stonehenge, some of which have been documented by veteran paranormal researcher, Nick Redfern in the book The Pyramids and the Pentagon: The Government’s Secret Pursuit of Mystic Relics, Ancient Astronauts and Lost Civilizations.
In it, using declassified documents and information obtains through the Freedom of Information Act, Redfern relays an account that occurred on the Salisbury Plain and Stonehenge in the late 1950s during military training exercises. At some stage during these exercises, several “strange aerial balls of light” appeared out of nowhere and hovered over the soldiers. However, rather than being surprised by this strange turn of events, the soldiers’ superiors gave “strict orders” that the unit should pursue the strange objects, as well as giving instructions on how to do so. They would eventually chase the orbs to Stonehenge. The orbs would hover directly over the ancient stone circle before disappearing upward in a matter of seconds.

Before they did, though, several of the soldiers approached these orbs a little closer and would experience the most bizarre “plasma-like phenomena” appearing to undergo intense and strange hallucination – hallucinations it would appear were unique to each individual involved. One, for example, would see an entity they would describe as looking like an angel, while another described a “dragon” and yet another claimed to have seen the orb morph into an “octopus-like creature”. While this was happening, those who had resisted approaching them could only see the orbs as their colleagues screamed in terror at some hideous entity or creature.
It is not clear whether the orbs appeared out of the blue or whether they were part of some kind of secret military experiment. However, it is probably worth noting another incident relayed by Redfern that is very similar in nature. It concerns a local woman who several years after the military experiment incident claimed she had noticed a strange orb appear over Stonehenge causing her to walk toward it for a closer look.
As she watched the orb hovering in the air it suddenly dropped to the ground in front of her. To her horror, it immediately morphed into a “monstrous, writhing worm” that had “two bulging eyes” that looked directly at her. At that point, she turned and ran from the location as fast as she could, unaware of what the creature was or where it went.

A Truly Intriguing And Mysterious Location
As we can see, then, Stonehenge has more than its fair share of strange incidents associated with it from our modern world.
If there is any truth in the assertions that the location was chosen – by whoever might have built it – because of the 14 ley lines that converge on the region (which itself can surely not be a coincidence), then might that also be the reason for the many strange encounters that have unfolded around the area in a modern world? Might this particular environment, as some people have put forward, have what is necessary for a portal or gateway to form, allowing strange vehicles and creatures access to our world? Or to whisk those who might be caught in it to another location, or even another time?
It is also interesting to note, for example, that of all the crop circles that appear on the planet, around 90 percent of those occur within a 40 miles radius of Stonehenge. Is this coincidence? Or might the strange phenomena have some kind of connection as to why those from antiquity chose this specific location to erect the stone monument that fascinates people of all ages still today, over 5000 years after it was first constructed?

Although I didn’t see any UFOs, orbs, or anything else of that nature, I recently visited Stonehenge with my wife in the summer of 2021. We had spent a couple of hours walking along the wooden trails that extend from the visitor's building, noting how hot it was under the glorious sunshine. As we waited for the bus that would take us to the site for an up-close tour, that sun was hidden behind thick, grey clouds. By the time we set off, the rain was starting to come down, and by the time we (and around a dozen other people as well as two guides) were standing in front of the stones listening to one of the guides speak, the rain was lashing down. I would be a liar if I said the apparent disappearance from 1971 didn’t cross my mind.
After listening to the short talk, the rain ceased, and we were invited to walk among the stones and experience them close-up. As we were marveling at the monstrous structure, taking pictures, and getting as close as we were allowed, I noticed an American couple, who were seemingly taking it in turns to stand between two smaller pillar-like stones. I couldn’t hear their full conversation, but I could hear them talking about “feeling energy”. I waited for them to move to another part of the monument and then stepped in between the two pillar-like stones myself.

I let my arms hang loosely at my sides – basically copying what I had seen the American couple doing. Amazingly, I felt a strange pull on each arm, as if I let them relax completely, they would move outward and stick to the pillars like magnets. I remained there for several minutes, experimenting with the sensation, and attempting to let my arms hang as loose as I could consciously do. At this point, my wife – who is certainly open-minded but much more skeptical of these kinds of things than me - walked over to me and I invited her to take my place in between the stones and to let her arms hang at her sides as loosely as she could.
She did so and immediately claimed that there was a strange sensation on her arm “like an energy” around it, as well as a similar static electric tingle down her legs. Even more intriguing to us, however, was that the bottom of her dress was also pulled to each side, similar to how you might expect static electricity to work. What’s more, it remained this way for several minutes after, having to be forced back to its usual position. Make of that what you will.
It really is an enchanting, unusual, and mysterious place, in equal measure. The video below looks at some of the mysterious and strange incidents connected to Stonehenge a little further.
